The New Noh Play ‘Holy Mother In Nagasaki’ Came To NYC.
新緑が香るニューヨーク、戦後70周年という節目に「長崎の聖母」が舞い降りました。
現代能「長崎の聖母」は、免疫学者であり文筆家だった故多田富雄氏が制作。主人公（シテ）を演じるのは、浦上天主堂で2005年11月にプレミアを迎えた当時と同じく、銕仙会の清水寛二氏です。「長崎の聖母」とは、1945年8月9日の午前11時2分に長崎を火の海で覆った原爆による悲劇を現代版の能に昇華した演目で、日米交流のための非営利団体ジャパン・ソサエティで開催されました。核拡散防止条約再検討会議（NPT）で各国要人が議論を戦わせる国連本部と、目と鼻の先の距離にあたります。
実行委員会関係者によると、14〜16日のチケットは完売という盛況ぶり。観阿弥・世阿弥が形式を整えてから600年以上の歴史を誇る能への関心の高さに加え、原爆という脅威を学ぼうとする姿勢がひしひし伝わってきます。NPT再検討会議の合意文書で広島や長崎への被爆地訪問が盛り込まれつつあったように、ニューヨーカーの事実に向き合う姿勢を見出すことができました。
会場は、ほぼアメリカ人で埋め尽くされていたものです。

戦後70周年を迎え、アメリカでは原爆に対する捉え方が随分変わったように感じます。原爆投下から69年にあたる2014年夏に放映を開始したドラマ「マンハッタン」が、まさにその例と言えるでしょう。原子爆弾の開発を目指す極秘プログラム”マンハッタン・プロジェクト”に携わった人物を描いた本作は、登場人物はオッペンハイマー博士など一部を除き全て架空の存在ながら当時の研究者の苦渋と葛藤を見事に描き切っています。
ドラマの冒頭から「766 days before Hiroshima（広島への原爆投下まで、766日） 」と、ロスアラモスの存在意義を突きつける。原爆の開発につまずく主人公の研究チーム責任者が黒板に書きなぐった「37855」は、その日の米兵戦死者の数を表す。住所を持たないニューメキシコ州の砂漠に忽然と建つ研究所エリアには、ディック・ロバートソンが歌う愛国歌「Goodbye Mama I’m Off To Yokohama（さらば母よ、我は横浜へ向かう）」が響き渡る。核爆弾こそ終戦への近道と信じて疑わない半面、研究者の口から「次の戦争はどうするんだ？スターリンが仮に原子爆弾を持てばどうなる？中国は？イランは？」と核拡散への恐怖を吐露する場面も。施設内での放射能漏れに気づいた者は、固く口を閉ざすしかない——。ここまで中立にリアリティ溢れる仕上がりを目指した作品は、かつてあったでしょうか。
NPT再検討会議では70周年の節目として日本が各国指導者の被爆地訪問を提案したものの、中国側の反対で盛り込まれない公算が大きくなってきました。それでも、くじける必要はありません。私たちには現代能「長崎の聖母」やドラマ「マンハッタン」を通じ、理解を深めるという手立てが残っています。
After almost 70 years, the semi-fictional drama “Manhattan” which depicts what happened at Los Alamos National Laboratory, premiered in the summer of 2014.
The show vividly pictured what could have happened there by starting with the line “766 days before Hiroshima”. Unable to find any clues to develop the first atomic bomb in the history, a frustrated scientist team leader harshly writes the number “37855″ – the war’s death toll as of that day. Believing the a-bomb could end the war, one can’t help but ask “What about the next war? What happens when Stalin’s gets one (atomic bomb)? China? The Shah of Iran?” While devoting themselves in the research and development or supporting their family, the effect of radiation slowly undermines their health and the region. The sense of stagnation starts to affect everyone there and gradually changes the relationships between the teams and couples. This critically acclaimed series will captivate your mind by its remarkable cinematography and stellar storyline with a human touch.

The new Noh piece “Holy Mother in Nagasaki” shows the devastation caused by the atomic bombs developed by Manhattan Project team. Noh is designated as a ‘Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO and the story is based on the novel about the female students who were victims of atomic bomb dropped in Nagasaki, adapted by Tomio Tada, an immunologist and author. A prominent Noh artist Kenji Shimizu and his group describe what the victims experienced in a Japanese traditional way of acting. The play has over 600 hundred years history. The eloquence of the dialogue is piercing, songs are solemn, and the Gregorian chant symbolizes the history of Nagasaki as the first introduced by Christianity.
While the new Noh play was performed at Japan Society, near the United Nations Headquarters, the review conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) almost accepted the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed at least 130,000 people. Japanese delegates pushed for world leaders to visit those 2 cities. In the meanwhile, Chinese counterparts opposed the proposition. Even so, people can always remember the tragedy by watching the drama “Manhattan” and Noh “Holy Mother Of Nagasaki”.
